As a proud binge listener of How I Built This with Guy Raz on NPR, I was just a little bit excited when I discovered that they have a position for an intern on the team for the Fall of 2019!
I still remember the the moment when I first came across How I Built This and Guy's unmistakably curious and captivating voice. It was as if great podcasting had been hidden from me up until that point, and boy, was I glad to be on the other side.
I have always been curiously passionate about entrepreneurship and how individuals are able to make an imprint on the world with their ideas. A fascination for great businesses and the stories behind them made How I Built This the perfect resource to do just that. In fact, two of my favourite entrepreneurs to have been featured on the show, Chip Wilson and Brian Scudamore, are from my hometown of Vancouver, B.C. Listening to Guy navigate through their journeys and break down the giant businesses they had built to the scrappy early days inspired me.
Over the hours and hours of listening to Guy Raz interviewing and story telling so elegantly, I fell in love with the art of broadcasting and journalism. I decided to jump into the world of writing and interviewing for myself and became a LinkedIn Youth Editor for my school, the University of British Columbia. Through the process, I have learned to love writing, researching and conversations more and more. I even started my own interview series featuring entrepreneurs and business leaders across Vancouver called #Blueprint.
I am beyond excited at the opportunity to apply to be an intern for How I Built This next month and have decided to start my own little project in anticipation and to satisfy my own excitement. I also needed a good excuse to listen to the episodes on the show again! So, I will be launching a project. How I Built This: Intern Edition. Through this project I will be recounting the stories told by Guy and his guests and sharing my key learnings, favourite quotes and the things that surprised and inspired me from each entrepreneur.
Stay tuned to see how I build this (pun intended). Tomorrow we will start with the story of Sarah Blakely and Spanx!
